Iraq Moves to Summon US Envoy After Habbaniyah Strike Kills Seven
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani personally directed the foreign ministry to call in the US envoy and deliver an official protest note following the attack on the Habbaniyah military clinic, an institution operating under the Iraqi Defense Ministry, according to the statement.
Authorities pulled no punches in their characterization of the assault, branding it a "fully fledged crime in violation of international law" that strikes at the very foundation of relations between the Iraqi and American peoples. Baghdad reaffirmed its right to respond through all measures permitted under the UN Charter.
The government further announced it would submit a formally documented complaint — backed by evidence and detailed records — to the UN Security Council and broader UN bodies, framing the move as a defense of Iraq's rights and sovereignty in the face of ongoing violations.
Earlier Wednesday, the Iraqi Defense Ministry confirmed that the Habbaniyah military clinic and an adjacent engineering unit, both located within the base's command structure in western Anbar province, were struck in the morning attack, killing seven soldiers and wounding 13 more.
The latest summoning marks the second such diplomatic action in as many days. On Tuesday, the Iraqi foreign ministry had already called in both the Iranian ambassador and the US chargé d'affaires to Baghdad to receive separate formal protests over two additional deadly strikes that occurred that day.
The escalating Iraqi diplomatic offensive comes against a backdrop of surging regional tensions, ignited by joint US-Israeli strikes against Iran beginning February 28 — a campaign to which Tehran and its regional allies have responded with retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli and American interests across the Middle East.
